How can teachers help students deal with stress?

Students are in a crucial stage of physical and mental development, facing pressures from various aspects of life. It is vital for class teachers to master effective stress relief methods to help students alleviate stress and promote their healthy mental and physical development.

How can teachers help students deal with stress?

  1. Establish a Positive Teacher-Student Relationship

Building a good teacher-student relationship is a crucial foundation for relieving students’ psychological stress. When students feel the care and support of their teacher, they are more willing to open up and share their inner pressures and concerns. To establish a good teacher-student relationship, teachers must first practice sincere listening.

When students face psychological pressure, the teacher should be a listener, maintaining an open and accepting attitude, patiently hearing out their worries and concerns, and avoiding judgment or criticism.

Additionally, teachers should respect every student’s personality and individuality, avoiding biases based on academic performance, family background, or other factors. In communication with students, teachers should use suggestions and inquiries to make students feel equal in their relationship with the teacher.
  2. Create a Positive Classroom Atmosphere

In a classroom atmosphere filled with positivity and harmony, students can feel mutual care and support, forming an invisible force that helps them better cope with life’s challenges. Teachers can organise a variety of engaging classroom activities, such as cultural performances, sports competitions, and social practice activities. These activities allow students to experience the warmth and strength of the group, fostering team spirit and a sense of collective honour.

Encourage mutual support and collective progress among students, creating a harmonious and friendly class environment. Furthermore, teachers can cultivate a positive class culture by establishing class rules, setting up role models, and recognising outstanding behaviour.

This helps guide students to develop correct values and perspectives on life, building their self-confidence and self-discipline. In such a classroom atmosphere, students will naturally strive for excellence and progress, maintaining an optimistic and resilient attitude when facing difficulties.
  3. Provide Emotional Management Techniques

In daily education and teaching, teachers can teach students simple yet effective emotional regulation methods.

For instance, deep breathing is a simple and highly effective way to regulate emotions. Additionally, mindfulness meditation is another effective method, where students focus on their breathing or bodily sensations to relax and reduce stress.

Apart from physical regulation techniques, teachers can also teach students positive self-suggestion techniques. When facing difficulties or challenges, students can use positive language to boost their self-confidence and motivation.
  4. Foster Students’ Self-Confidence

Teachers should be adept at recognising students’ strengths and talents in daily learning and provide timely affirmation and encouragement. This personalised attention makes students feel valued and recognised, boosting their inner confidence.

Teachers can also design challenging tasks and activities based on students’ actual abilities. By completing these tasks, students experience success, further strengthening their belief in their abilities. Additionally, teachers should focus on developing students’ self-awareness and self-evaluation skills.

By guiding students to reflect on and summarise their experiences, they gain a clearer understanding of their strengths and weaknesses, establishing a proper self-evaluation system to avoid excessive self-doubt or arrogance.
  5. Encourage Physical Activity

Exercise is an effective way to relieve stress. Through participation in sports, students can release excess energy and negative emotions while enhancing their physical fitness and immunity. Teachers can encourage students to actively participate in school sports activities or organise class sports competitions.

Incorporating short physical activities, like stretching exercises or jogging, during class breaks can help students relax amidst intense study sessions. Teachers can also communicate with parents to support their children’s exercise habits at home, such as outdoor hiking or cycling, to foster a habit of regular physical activity.
  6. Organise Outdoor Activities

Outdoor activities allow students to temporarily escape the stressful learning environment and immerse themselves in the tranquility and beauty of nature. Teachers can regularly organise students to participate in outdoor excursions, picnics, or museum visits to enrich their extracurricular life, alleviate psychological stress, and stimulate their desire for knowledge and exploration.
  7. Promote the Power of Role Models

For students, role models can inspire their ambition and drive, encouraging them to align themselves with high standards and continuously improve. Teachers can establish exemplary students in the class who demonstrate excellent performance and a positive mindset as role models.

Through class meetings or discussions, invite these students to share their study methods and experiences. Peer encouragement is often more effective than advice from teachers or parents, as students are more likely to resonate with and draw motivation from their peers.

Teachers themselves should also serve as role models, demonstrating dedication, care, and high standards in their work. When teachers embody the values they advocate, students are more likely to follow their lead.
  8. Teach Time Management Skills

In the fast-paced learning environment, mastering time management methods and techniques is crucial for students. Teachers can teach students time management skills, such as creating detailed study plans, breaking down tasks, and arranging their schedule to ensure sufficient sleep. By mastering these techniques, students can manage their time better, reducing unnecessary stress.
  9. Conduct Mental Health Education Activities

Mental health education is essential for enhancing students’ psychological resilience. Teachers can regularly invite mental health experts or psychologists to give lectures or hold themed class meetings on mental health.

By spreading knowledge about mental health, students can learn basic psychological adjustment methods and improve their psychological resilience. Additionally, it’s important to provide personalised psychological counselling based on individual students’ needs.

Teachers can observe students closely, gather feedback, and identify any psychological issues or concerns early, providing personalised counselling or recommending relevant psychological resources to help students overcome psychological challenges.
  10. Collaborate with Parents

Parents play a crucial role in maintaining students’ mental health, being their first companions and educators. Therefore, teachers must maintain close communication with parents.

Regular parent-teacher meetings or home visits can help convey correct educational concepts and methods to parents, enabling them to better understand their children’s inner world.

Collaborating with parents to solve issues in students’ learning and life, and encouraging them to provide emotional support and understanding at home, is essential. This deep communication not only strengthens the connection between school and home but also provides a solid foundation for developing targeted educational strategies.
