Tutorials and Lectures. Many international students might not be familiar with the differences between the two when they first arrive. Let’s take a look!
What is a Lecture?
A Lecture is a traditional teaching format.
- Size: Usually large, with potentially hundreds of students attending.
- Format: The professor or lecturer teaches from the front while students listen and take notes.
- Content: The focus is on delivering key theories and concepts, with the lecturer systematically explaining the course material.
- Interaction: There is little interaction during the class, but students can ask questions via email or during office hours.
What is a Tutorial?
A Tutorial, often translated as “small group discussion” or “study session,” is a more interactive learning format. It’s also a great way to boost your grades and make friends!
- Size: Smaller, typically around 20 students, allowing for more interaction.
- Format: Led by a teaching assistant (TA) or lecturer, students sit together to discuss and review the content covered in Lectures.
- Content: The focus is on deepening the understanding of Lecture material through discussions, exercises, and group activities.
- Interaction: Highly interactive, with opportunities for students to ask questions, share opinions, and engage with peers and the TA.
Difference Between Tutorials and Lectures
- Lectures: Provide the overall knowledge and theoretical framework needed to understand the course.
- Tutorials: Help deepen comprehension through discussion and interaction, and provide an opportunity to clarify any doubts.
Tips
- Pre-read: Review the material before the Lecture to better understand the content.
- Participate: Ask questions and engage in discussions during the Tutorial to maximise learning.
- Take notes: Write down key points in Lectures and bring questions and notes to Tutorials for better discussion and understanding.
