If you’ve never hired a tutor before, the hourly rate is usually the first thing that trips people up — it varies a lot more than most parents expect, and the reasons why aren’t always obvious.
Tutors Field looked at rates across thousands of tutors in their own directory to work out how pricing actually shakes out. For local primary and high school tutors, the typical range sits around $40–$50 an hour. Tutors based overseas or without direct experience in the Australian curriculum tend to charge roughly 15–20% less — mostly because they’re less familiar with the local syllabus, not because the tutoring itself is lower quality.
Rate isn’t the only thing worth checking, though.
A working with children check. A police check. Both, ideally, not one or the other.
A bachelor’s degree at minimum. Master’s is common too, especially for HSC or VCE-level subjects.
Experience matters more than people think going in. Five years or more tends to show up in how a session actually runs — less time explaining the same thing three different ways, more time on the actual gap.
Syllabus knowledge is easy to overlook but hard to fake. HSC, VCE, WACE, SACE, QCE — these aren’t interchangeable, and a tutor who’s only taught one can genuinely struggle with another.
None of this shows up in the hourly rate. It shows up after four or five sessions, when you can tell whether things are actually moving.
Cheaper isn’t always cheaper, either. A $40 tutor who needs fifteen sessions to shift a grade usually costs more than a $50 tutor who gets there in eight.
If you’re booking around school holidays rather than term time, the same checks apply — just earlier. Checking your state’s 2027 school holiday dates before you start looking gives you a real window to compare tutors, instead of taking whoever’s free in the last week before the break starts.
